2008 - Art of Chemical Peeling
Chemical peeling is a controlled wounding of the skin. This is obtained by applying various caustic agents leading to de-sloughing of the layers of the skin and re-epithelisation.
This is an ancient procedure, which has become a science and an art in the last century with the help of histological corroboration. Chemical peeling is enjoying its renaissance in the recent years due to its higher safety profile compared to other ablative resurfacing modalities and while jury is still out to determine the efficacy of non-ablative modalities. It is generally divided into three categories namely superficial, medium and deep peels. It can be used for freshening the skin with glycolic acids to treating deep wrinkles with phenol. With increasing depth of the peel we see greater benefits and also increasing the risk of complications.
The objective of this presentation is to familiarise the audience with the concept of chemical peels, indications and complications.
